In residence at SEA Foundation is visual artist, ethicist and PhD candidate at TiU, José Krijnen. Her work is about the fragile, shifting nature of memory. The artist experiences memory as something fluid, always changing, and never fully defined imaginary thoughts. Her work draws on universal gestures, patterns, and clothing as icons that speak across cultures but don’t pin down one specific story. Drawing from Barthes’ idea that symbols gain new meanings every time they’re reinterpreted, Krijnen creates memory-related spaces for viewers and by using patterns and gestures that feel universally human, she hints at the connections we all share, without tying them to any one person or place. Krijnen draws on themes of texture, movement, and infinity while reflecting on bodily gestures that, like memory, must be constantly recreated. This residence reignited the artist’s passion for painting, providing her with space to further explore the intersections in her practice. Read the article on SEA Foundation |
